We do not believe there is a right or wrong way to navigate your pregnancy, postpartum and birth. Every family has unique preferences, experiences, and values.

Our role is to give you the education and support to learn what is most important to you, help you learn the skills needed to advocate your desires, and walk you through each decision with unwavering support.

You and your partner are going to remember your birth and postpartum experiences for the rest of your life. Our goal is that we make the space for you to remain in the driver’s seat, and feel confident no matter what choices you make for your family!

Our doulas are on call between 38 weeks 0 days and 42 weeks 6 days

As soon as you go into labor, even if you’re not sure, you will give your doula a phone call. This is when her labor support starts!

For most people, early labor is very manageable alone at home. We typically want our clients focusing on rest, connection, and have a healthy dose of denial. (A watched pot never boils)

Our doulas will have frequent check-ins with our clients. They will check in to see how you are doing, make suggestions, answers questions, help you find your rhythm, and can be a sounding board for you and your partner.

When you are ready for your doula to join you, just give her a call. We do not have a firm rule for when your doula will join you because everyone wants their doula at different times. However, most people ask their doula to join them as they transition to the hospital around active labor.

Once your doula joins you, she stays with you through the duration of your labor. She is there to help protect your space, offer comforting touch, help you change positions, ensure that your partner feels comfortable, remind you to care for yourselves, facilitate communication with your providers, advocate, and help you remind in the driver’s seat.

She also helps with the pushing stage and the immediate postpartum period, so you can feel confident and supported in those first few hours.

No matter what type of birth you plan for, our doulas know how to support you.

It is vital for doulas to have backup doulas in place in case they are needed. We rarely need to activate a backup doula, but if we do, it is almost always a doula from the NABS team. This way you know that you are receiving high quality care from someone with a similar philosophy, knows how you have been prepared, and is from the same team so you know they have been properly vetted.

You can reach out to your doula as often as you like. Every doula has different communication preferences, but most of our doulas prefer to text or voice chat for the day to day support.

If there was ever a circumstance that you needed to reach your doula immediately, you just give her a call.

You can have as many hours of support as you need, but our fees include up to 18-hours of in-person support. After 18-hours, we ask that our clients compensate their doulas at $30 per hour. The most likely scenario is that you will have your baby before that threshold is met.

Every doula approaches their prenatal meetings slightly differently, so it is always a good idea to discuss this in your consultation with them.

In general during the first prenatal you discuss: your desires for your birth, fears you may have, interventions, partner support, how you want your doula to support you, and so much more!

There are sections for both the birthing person and their partner to fill out! We love it when both parents can attend!

We like to call your second, in-home, prenatal your labor rehearsal. Ideally you have taken an out of hospital childbirth education course before this meeting, so you have a good foundation of what labor will look like.

During this meeting you discuss what it looks like to go into labor, early labor tips, laboring at home, when to transition to your birth location/ settle in for a home birth, partner support, birth planning, and sometimes postpartum and breastfeeding.

We believe education is the key to navigating this path with confidence, so we love offering as many resources as you want! We include a lot of information in our NABS Client Resource Hub. Some of our most noteworthy resources are our:

We help match our potential clients with their prospective doulas on our initial 30-minute discovery call. We help make the process a little easier by learning about your wishes, what you desire with doula support, what personalities you mesh with, we consider your due date, home address, and birthing location.

Once we’ve discussed your options on our discovery call, then we schedule your consultation with the prospective doula, or doulas if you choose to interview more than one!

After your call, we always check in to see how the consult went. If you meet with a doula, and she isn’t the best match, just let us know, and we can help you pair with another prospective doula until you find your perfect match!

Rachael and Hannah are always available to help with anything along the way! We believe in transparency, support, and accountability. If anything were to ever arise, please know that we have an open door policy.

We think the sweet spot for hiring your birth doula is at the beginning of your second trimester. This allows plenty of time to nurture your relationship and prepare for your upcoming birth! Reaching out early also helps ensure that we have plenty of availability. However, it is never too late to hire a doula. Always reach out if you are unsure.

We recommend that you hire your postpartum doula at least three months before your estimated due date. Overnight postpartum doulas in particular tend to book months in advance.

We strongly encourage taking an out of hospital childbirth education course! Taking a course like this will be comprehensive, and will help you stay in the driver’s seat during labor.
